Silent Sifter App Reviews

Does the job … but there is one missing crucial feature ...

I am not the kind of person that think that nothing is good enough, but in my opinion, this software lacks one crucial feature: compare files not only on file names. It should check the file contents. Let me explain: if, for some reason, you changed the name of some pictures. The way Silent Sifter works, it will never get the duplicate. Maybe, if it finds identical file signatures, it could check the file contents, byte level. Why 3 stars? I like the software, but for the price, the lacking feature took 2 stars from it.

Problem with new photos app

This software is very good and already saved me a lot of time, but apple udgraded iphoto to Photos app and this one is not working. Please solve it !!!

can not customize directory structure

Because you can not customize the directory structure, this app is useless for professionals who already have a system set up

Fantastic

Exactly what I was looking for to upload and organize photos from the 2 iPhones and iPad in the house - works like a charm. Even better with the latest update. If you haven multiple devices from which you take photographs, this is the best way to keep them organized on your Mac.

Hasn’t Ruined Photos Yet

Not always reliable in sifting. It will not sift another job into the same destination folder after completing a large job. I’ve got tens of thousands of photos, and I wonder what other features do not work. I bet the puirchase price that SilentSifter would work, but I’m not betting ten years of photos. 500 Photos in the trial is not enough trial to see how all the SilentSifter features work. Blame it on Maverick OS 10.9? Go ahead, but be aware that SilentSifter uses apple rendering and that the last SilentSifter update was two days ago. I really don’t care what a photo sorting program costs, I just want it to be dependable. Maybe it will work for you. Find out! Pay your money and take your chance. Good luck.

Works great with my 41000 photo collection.

Works with my 41000 photo collection and various cameras. Stopped working after I upgrade to OSX Maverics but that was fixed a couple hours after I submitted a ticket on the vendors site.

Does what it says and great support

Great functionality, cleaned up my photos and removed the duplicates all in a simple and easy to understand. Had a small issue of my own doing but support was there to assist. Highly recommended!

Way, way, way overpriced.

For what this app does, it should be five or six dollars. I very much regret this purchase, as it’s hardly effective for the large project I’m working on containing 39,000+ photos. The interface is slow and clumsy, and doesn’t provide a decent way to review duplicates, etc. I just wish digikam or the like were available for OS X. That’s photo software. Not this glorified copy/paste functionality.

Does the job perfectly

I tried a handful of other apps before I found this one. This is the perfect app for photo sorting. The duplicate detection and collission features are also really nice. The many hours it saved me from having to manually sort my images makes this app well worth the price.

Great and useful app

As you will read in many books on photography, a careful organization of the photos is the fundamental key to having a smooth and efficient workflow. This is a very useful application that allows you to automate and save time in organizing your photos. The customer service is great and quick to respond to requests and help users.

A work in progress

This program is a great idea, but is still a work-in-progress. First there is the folder bug. When I tried to use a folder as an input, all I got was a empty entry box. Had to close the program to get out of it. Had to repeat three more times before the normal finder file open appeared. Seems to work now. Then there is the process of finding repeats. If you sift but cancel before its finished, the files won’t be copied, but they will be noted, so when you sift again, these files are ignored. This is a big bug. In other words, even if sifting takes hours and hours, never cancel or you will lose those pictures. You need much better control over what it thinks is a duplicate and a way to clear it out. Again I love the concept here, but really you need more control over managing duplicates, and you need better control determine the length of a moment. Often one trip will appear as many “moments."

CANNOT REMOVE DUPLICATES, FORCES FOLDER STRUCTURE

Silent Sifter can only find duplicates if the files NAMES are EXACTLY the same. It also creates arbitrary folder organization by date. If you didn’t WANT those photos organized by date, too bad. You have to go through the output and manually remove each and every file from the folder imposed upon it.

Ive been Sifted

Very cool. Does exactly as advertised. It sorted over 4,000 pictures in less than 3 minutes!

Definately worth $4!!!!

I had 2,000 pictures on my camera that i wanted to copy from my camera and put in my external hard drive. If i did it through iPhoto i would have had to import all of them to my computer. I didnt want to do that. So I used the sifter and It did it in about 5 minutes and even sorted all of the photos for me!! This app is great!

Missed Some Photos

I plan to go slow in using this on my photos. On my first attempt I let it import a mess of photos from a cameras SD card. It got most of them but for some reason skipped everything after July of this year. I had never imported those before so there were no duplicates. I will do a count before and after once I let it organize some of my other messes and see if there are any other discrepancies. On the photos it did organize it did just fine! Was what I was looking for… **Update: I did some more photos and it seems to count the files in the "before" folders correctly and then claims that the same number were processed and put in the desired "organized" location. On a seperate file count its untrue- there are fewer files sorted than claimed. I ran it again only on some from August of this year and first it claimed them sorted, and then on a 2nd run it claimed that they were all duplicates but there is not a trace of them in the sorted photos. All photos that have dates after July 2012 are completely gone. Im reducing to 2 stars as this utility is not very useful after all.

Crashing immediately - not very convincing.

Added custom target configuration Camera/Type/Year/Month and configured in and out folders to process. The source and the destination folders are on different drive partitions and are including a lot of duplicates in different directories and overall 61,000 pictures. App is crashing immediately after analysing the folder and this is repeatable even with different target structure configurations. Not very convincing start and not sure I would like to do this again and rely on it going forward. I am using version 2.0.1 and the latest and fully updated Apple OS on my MacBook Pro.

Very good but one missing function

Very good app, I wish it could remove photos from the source though.

finally a great app!

love this app just wish i could review/delete photos from the source before i sync. otherwise great app to stay organized with video and pics.

amazing, efficient

Silent Sifter has saved me days of opening and re-rating and refiling photographs. Ive always been super-conscientious about backing up, which was great until I lost track of my different filing and rating schemes. Instead of spending a week or more going through thousands of images, I let Silent Sifter identify all the duplicate images, and re-sort unique images by date into a simple set of folders. I still have to do a lot re-rating and tagging, but knowing that I wont be looking at the exact same file in 4 different folders across 7 days means I can concentrate on the photographs themselves. SS is very flexible. I hadnt planned on letting it manage future downloads from my cameras, but it seems like the best way now.

finally….

finally, a photo organizing app that is not only simple, reliable, efficient & accurate but free as well. an absolute necessity.
